The most significant aspect of Safavid history in Iran is the adoption of Shi'a Islam. The Safavids undertook various measures to promote Shi'ism: they invited Arab religious scholars from outside Iran and supported Shi'a rituals. The shrines of the Shi'a Imams and their descendants, which held special importance for Shi'as, were revered by the Safavids. While some studies have examined the Safavid protection of the Mashhad Shrine during the reigns of Shah Tahmasb and Shah Abbas, there has been little research to explore the Safavid impact on Imamzadeh shrines, i.e., comparing pre-Safavid and post-Safavid periods. This study traces the history of the renowned Shah Abdol Azim Shrine near Tehran up to the 19th century. It also examines the Safavid impact, how the shrine changed after the rise of the Safavid state, and how it functioned after the fall of the Safavids. Particular attention is paid to the waqf or religious endowment belonging to the shrine, which provided financial support. Finally, this study highlights the Safavid contribution to the shrine and to Shi'aization in general.
