The construction of Sasanian monarchy was essentially established by Ardashir I on the basis of the Iranian identity. According to the historical accounts and archaeological evidence, Ardashir I employed various social, political, and religious components to promote and propagate this basis. Hence, the Sasanians utilized their lineage, religion, and cultural heritages as effective boosters for promoting their identity. The Sasanian monarchs benefited also from the common historical memories and mythical beliefs to rationalize the concept of identity and endeavoured to introduce themselves as the governors who continue on the old Iranian traditions. With this in mind, they employed several kinds of cultural means such as coins, bas-reliefs, inscriptions, and architecture to propagate and instill this system of identity. Consequently, the Sasanian perception of identity was injected into the Iranian system of thought and was followed by the Muslim caliphates and sultans who succeeded the Sasanian monarchs in Iran after the Sasanian fall.
